It’s show time! And in the New Forest that means only one thing – Brockenhurst’s beautiful New Park hosting everything from sheep parades, ferret racing, falconry and hands-on farmyard experiences, as well as international show-jumping, cookery demonstrations (the best way for us to show off all our lovely food and produce) and the chance to witness a Polo demonstration
The theme of next week’s show, which runs from July 25-27, is ‘join the adventure’. And there’ll be plenty of adventures for you to enjoy; whether it’s a tug of war with a tractor (go on, you’ve always wondered…), trying your hand at pottery making, joining in with our Fun Kitchen or learning the proper way to plant vegetables
There are plenty of mini-adventures to be had, too. You’ll be able to get up close in safety to some of our most magnificent farm animals; from the awesome majesty of a Limousin bull, to the miracle that is a hatching egg, and there are plenty of hands-on experiences to enjoy, including rolling your own beeswax candles in the Honey and Bee tent which will be buzzing with apiaristic activities
Outside you can witness displays of everything from milking, to thrilling motocross stunts featuring three-time British champion Jamie Squibb, as well as the popular livestock parades.
The New Forest and Hampshire County show is the home of the Heavy Horse Musical Drive and this year there’ll be 16 teams pulling their drays and carriages in delicate formation – not easy when these gentle giants of the equine world can weigh more than 1,000 kg apiec
If it’s mechanical beasts you prefer, then you’ll catch plenty of those, too, because they’ll be helping to celebrate the 100th birthday of that agricultural workhorse, the Ford tractor, in the Old Time Farming area.
Witness some of our fiercely-fought competitions; from blacksmithing to charity duck racing, or browse and buy at the 600 trade stands and the 40 food stalls that will be selling all manner of Forest produce and Hampshire fare. Our dedicated food hall showcases produce from around the county, so whether it’s a buffalo burger, award-winning cheese or a bottle of sparkling wine, you can take a taste of Hampshire with you when you head for home.
Before you go, however, make time to check out the Heart of the New Forest to find out more about the Forest itself, where they’ll explain the difference between an Agister and a Verderer, why you shouldn’t feed the ponies, as well as show off some of the Forest’s ancient skills.
You’ll also be able to find out more about us, too! Visit Go New Forest at Stand 137 in Block 13 to learn more about what we’re doing to look after and promote this magical part of the world and make sure you enter our Summer Extravaganza of New Forest prizes. And, to tempt you further you’ll also be able to snap up your Brand New Forest Card with our special show BOGOF offer, so you can save money at nearly 400 businesses in the New Forest, throughout the summer and beyond (see www.brandnewforest.com for details of all current offers)
